The Work Behind the World of Ten Thousand Shards and TTS Editions
Before there was a website, there were practices, materials, their objects, and mechanisms: text and clay, light and shadow, paper and texture, motion, pressure, and release. There was the work of listening and observing, searching and collecting, breaking and building, holding and letting go, not to mention walking …, so many miles of walking and working out what each moment rightfully demanded.
TTS Editions is a place where that accumulated work becomes concrete.
Books, journals, archival materials, editions, and other elements form a single field, not as representations but as things in themselves, made to leave the virtual world, enter the real, and take on lives of their own.
The work of the world (and the world of the work) that is Ten Thousand Shards is multivalent. It is digital-material, yes—or, better yet, digital-material-technical-aesthetic-moral-ethical-spiritual by default, all at once and all at one point. TTS Editions traverses and breaks that plane in its own way, printing traces through its passages.
Ten Thousand Shards: Time, Attention, Craft | Standard Edition
The Standard Edition of Time, Attention, Craft is conceived as the foundational print publication of Ten Thousand Shards. Here, new pottery work images collide and overlap with street photography and essays in a single physical volume, where lines of thought spiral, interact, and return. Handmade ceramic objects become photographic subject matter; archives offer glimpses into working processes; translated texts open onto new passages. This is where Ten Thousand Shards finds its first public material expression as an art book in which seemingly disparate creative practices encounter one another within a single field.
Ten Thousand Shards: Time, Attention, Craft | Collector’s Edition
Time, Attention, Craft Collector’s Edition travels deeper.
Cloth-bound, slip-cased, and including selected archival materials, the Collector’s Edition expands the physical territory of the Standard Edition and makes room for things the primary volume cannot accomodate.
Here, one finds documents, images, and traces that survived because they were worth keeping. The Collector’s Edition is therefore not simply the Standard Edition made fancier; it offers a different encounter with the project, placing before the reader an archive and the archive of a practice that has been forming for decades.
TTS Journal
TTS Journal is a machine disguised as a book, or perhaps a book disguised as a machine. We don’t quite know, and neither are we sure that there’s a difference.
TTS Journal is an object for writing, recording, noticing, collecting, translating, remembering, forgetting, redirecting, reclaiming, and beginning again. Its relationship to Ten Thousand Shards is fundamentally unstable; it belongs to the project without explaining it, participating in it from the fringes, at the idea-(l)imit of practice. In this sense, then, TTS Journal is liminal by nature.
TTS Journal thus invites you to make your own connections, to follow what catches your attention, and to record it before it’s gone. It asks you to build a system that makes sense through use, offering itself as an element within the system itself—a cipher-machine of your devising that brings things forth and lets them hold place in the world.
