Danish Beer, 1954 | Excerpt
Translated from the Japanese by Christopher Southward, Summer 2026
I love beer, so I’ve made sure to drink some daily during my trip, and the best beer I’ve had since leaving Japan is a Danish brew called Tuborg, which I enjoyed at a Russian restaurant in New York City. Its crisp finish naturally sets it apart from Japanese beer, but I was surprised to find that it even outdoes anything I’ve tasted of American, British, German, Czechoslovakian, and French beers. Then again, even America’s Schlitz tastes better than Japan’s Kirin.
Japanese beers exported to the United States are no match for American brands, where I’ve discovered that freshness is key. I’ve also found that the German beers I’ve tried in the United States don’t live up to the hype.
