Takeuchi Kozo (1921-1945)

Takeuchi Kōzō wrote with quietly striking clarity about youth, love, ordinary life, and the absurd brutality of wartime Japan. His poems juxtapose humor, tenderness, and an almost childlike immediacy with an increasingly stark awareness of death, military life, and the loss of individual freedom. Takeuchi wrote prolifically before his death at twenty-three. His work endures for its refusal of militaristic rhetoric and its insistence on preserving an intensely personal, irreverent human voice amid war.
