Three Poems || Death in Winter | To the North Sea | Sunset | n.d.

Translated from the Japanese by Christopher Southward | 2024*

Death in Winter

A moth

has quietly fallen from the screen see

dead no doubt

And I simply watch

as it passes

peacefully

alone

leaving not even one behind

cold no doubt

Indifferent resigned

the moth dies

alone

And because I do nothing

people will immediately

forget me

But not to worry

for I too

will die see

alone

Frozen like the moth

To the North Sea

On the plains of the great nighttime sea

starless

gale upon waves

a blizzard

dark

a blizzard

rages

Tossed about on the North Sea

a lone soul

somehow holds on holds on

clinging adrift to a scrap

now slipping away

nipping at the snow

taking on the wind

surviving still surviving still until

finally exhausted he drowns

Sunset

A form red red and square

falls onto the screen

Green green and round a leaf

blows on the crimson breeze

A bat

flits about

Someone

softly shuts a door

lights a lamp

sips soup

Even the clear red western skies

grey and

darken as

a diamond catches the last rays

of light

Then someone say jots something

into a journal

snuffs a lamp

assesses the day and

gives thanks above

in prayer
